Man Struck By Car and Killed Trying to Cross I-35 at 2:30 AM

Austin Police say that a man died trying to cross the interstate during the night on May 15, and that the driver involved is cooperating with an investigation into the incident.

In a news release, APD stated, “The preliminary investigation shows that a silver, 2010 Mercury Grand Marquis was traveling southbound in the middle lane of the 12200 block of N. IH 35 southbound. A pedestrian was attempting to cross from the center median to the west side of the highway when he was struck by the Mercury.”

This took place at about 2:35 a.m in the 12200 block of I-25 southbound.

The driver of the Mercury immediately took the next exit, pulled into a gas station and waited for police. “It is not believed that driver impairment, speeding, or weather/road conditions were factors in this incident,” the police notice says.

Austin Fire and EMS tried to help the pedestrian, but he succumbed to his injuries and died on scene at 3:05 a.m.

The victim was identified as D.J. Davis, a Native American/Alaskan Native man born in 1985.

APD’s Vehicular Homicide Unit is investigating the case. The information released by the department thus far is based only on the preliminary investigation.

Austin has had 35 traffic fatalities so far this year, outpacing last year’s total of 30 by the same point in the year.
