Deputies Make Arrest After Second Pflugerville Area Homicide in Two Days

It’s been a busy week for Travis County homicide detectives. After a fatal stabbing Monday, another man was shot dead Tuesday, both times just outside the Pflugerville city limits.

Sheriff’s deputies got the 9-1-1 call shortly before midnight last night, reporting a man had been shot in the 2800-block of Halite Bend. That’s just off Wells Branch Parkway, east of Immanuel Road and Dessau Road, in the direction of Austin Executive Airport.

When the deputies arrived they located the victim, later identified as Cornelius Ramon Moore, 31, of Bastrop, and began CPR. But they were unsuccessful and he was pronounced deceased at the scene, according to a news release from the Travis County Sheriff’s Office.

The news release says, “Additional deputies began searching for suspects. They determined a suspect may be near the 6600-block of Deatonhill Drive in Austin. TCSO requested the assistance of the Austin Police Department (APD) to check that location.”

“After APD determined a suspect may be present, TCSO patrol, SWAT, and Crisis Negotiation Team responded to the location on Deatonhill. APD located and detained two suspects as TCSO units arrived. One was released after being interviewed by detectives.”

“Detectives believe at least one of the suspects was known to the decedent and this was an isolated incident. There is no danger to the public.”

In the earlier incident Monday, a man was stabbed in the 500-block of E. Howard Lane, which is an unincorporated area between Austin and Pflugerville. He was later identified as Jose Vicente Fernandez-Olveda, 48, of Mexico.

According to the 9-1-1 call, the suspect in the stabbing also threatened a second person, but he surrendered without incident after deputies arrived on scene.

TCSO hasn’t yet released the identity of the alleged perpetrators.

These killings were the second and third to be investigated by the Travis County Sheriff’s Office in 2021. That compares to five homicides investigated by TCSO last year, in addition to at least one suspicious death. Detectives are also looking into the case of a Washington State teen whose body was found on a conveyor belt at a recycling center in March.

TCSO has jurisdiction in homicides that take place in unincorporated areas of the county, while municipal police forces typically handle cases inside city limits. In Austin itself, homicides were up 50% this year through April, according to monthly crime reports published by APD.
