Travis GOP Opposes ‘Outrageous’ Candidate in Primary for State Board of Education

The Travis County Republican Party Executive Committee passed a resolution on Tuesday opposing the candidacy of Robert Morrow, a perennial candidate seeking a position on the State Board of Education.

The committee, which consists of precinct chairs from across the Austin area within Travis County, unanimously approved the resolution saying that Morrow “has a history of misogynist and vulgar language” (an allegation evidenced by Morrow’s public Facebook posts).

The resolution adds that Morrow also has “made outrageous and slanderous allegations about President Trump, members of the Bush family, and Governor Rick Perry, among others.”

Morrow garnered some press attention in 2016 when he was booted from a townhall for then presidential candidate Donald Trump for holding a sign saying “Trump is a child rapist.”

Two other candidates are running for the State Board of Education, District 5, on the Republican primary ballot: Inga Cotton and Lani Popp. Neither won an endorsement from the party.

In its press release, the Travis GOP explained, “County political parties typically do not endorse or oppose opponents in contested Republican primary races. But one race in particular drew the opposition of the Travis County Republican Party Executive Committee.”

The statement adds, “Morrow, elected by a fluke to the chairmanship of the Travis County Republican Party in 2016, was censured for personal conduct and ad hominem attacks on revered public figures before being removed for leaving the GOP to run for President of the United States as an independent.”

“A steering committee successfully managed the business of the party during Morrow’s three-month term.”
