Photos: A Day of Fury at Austin Police Headquarters

Hundreds of protesters gathered at the Austin Police Department headquarters on Saturday and marched through the downtown.

They chanted “No justice, no peace,” “Hands up, don’t shoot,” “Black lives matter,” and “I can’t breath” – a reference to the recent killing of George Floyd, an unarmed black man in Minneapolis. They also chanted the names of Floyd and Mike Ramos, an Austin man killed in a police shooting last month.

Protesters gathered at the police headquarters at noon, many carrying signs remembering the deaths of George Floyd and Mark Ramos.

Large crowds stood outside the headquarters while others marched around downtown including to the Capital grounds.

Police monitored crowds throughout the day, standing in front of the police headquarters and along the interstate among other places. They also fired tear gas and rubber bullets on several occasions.

Protestors held their hands up shouting “hands up, don’t shoot” and at one point all knelt on the ground in front of the police headquarters. For additional coverage and photos of the day’s events:
