Teens Use ‘Assault-Style Rifle’ in South Austin Convenience Store Robbery

Two young men in their late teens or early 20s robbed a convenience store in South Austin about two hours before dawn on Monday morning.

The Austin Police Department’s Robbery Unit is asking for the public’s help identifying the suspects, pictured above, who robbed the C-Mart on S. 1st Street, between Slaughter Lane and William Cannon.

The suspects entered the store and confronted the clerk, forcing him to give them cash, lottery tickets, and vapor cigarettes. One of them had an assault-style rifle, according to a police report.

Both suspects left the scene on foot, heading eastbound on Dittmar Road.

The suspects are described as:

  • Suspect #1: Black male, dark complexion, average height/weight, late teens to early 20s, dark-colored COVID-19 mask, white “Poetic Justice Hoodie” with a red undershirt, baggy gray sweat pants, black/white basketball shoes, and tan gloves.
  • Suspect #2: Black male, light complexion, average height/weight, late teens to early 20s, light-colored COVID-19 mask with black trim, white hoodie with a pouch pocket, maroon or dark red striped Polo type undershirt, black athletic pants, black/white Jordan basketball shoes, gray gloves, armed with an assault-style rifle

Austin convenience stores have been hit repeatedly in a new crime wave, including a 7-Eleven at 1901 E. William Cannon Drive that was robbed recently twice in three nights, on October 9 and October 12.

A suspect in one of those robberies also was involved in a robbery of a Circle K on East Cesar Chavez on October 10. He entered the store and held the clerk at gunpoint while demanding money, then fled on foot.

A 7-Eleven on West Slaughter Lane was robbed on October 14, and a 7-Eleven at 13641 N. IH-35 was hit September 30. The robbers in the latter case had black semi-automatic handguns.

Three robbers also hit the Shell Station at 2241 S. IH-35 service road on October 8 at 3:30 a.m. They entered the store as the clerk was restocking shelves and held him at gunpoint while demanding money. They robbed not only the register but the clerk too, and merchandise.

Another robbery took place that day at about 8:00 a.m. at the Shepherd’s Market at 3708 Southridge Drive. Three suspects entered the store and held the clerk at gunpoint while demanding money. After robbing the clerk and taking cash from the register, they fled in a light-colored sedan.
