Austin High School Football Coach Mourns Son Lost in Pflugerville Shooting

LBJ High School Football Coach Jahmal Fenner has identified his 21-year-old son Cameron Nelson as the victim in a slaying that took place the night November 23 in Pflugerville.

Friends and family of the victim gathered for a balloon release in his honor at Mueller Park on Sunday afternoon. Fenner said that he loved his son and would miss him forever.

According to the Pflugerville Police Department, Nelson was shot at about 10:00 pm on Foothill Farms Loop and fled to a nearby shopping center, where he was found by EMS and police and pronounced deceased on scene.

Another gunshot victim involved in the same incident was taken to a nearby hospital and found in stable condition. Police haven’t yet shared any information about a suspect or the circumstances of the shooting.

Despite the loss of his son, Fenner coached his team to a 68-24 win over Boerne on Saturday in the Class 4A Division I regional semifinal in San Antonio. He dedicated the win to his son, whom he said loved football. “This one’s for Cam,” he said, holding aloft a trophy, according to video of the event.
