Scammers are contacting Texans by phone pretending to be officers of local law enforcement agencies, including the University of Texas at Austin Police Department and the Williamson County Sheriff’s Department.

The UT Police Department warned students of the issue over the weekend, saying callers are using fake names and possibly even software that can change their caller ID to falsely show that the call is from a local area code.

The scammers are reportedly warning students that they face arrest if they don’t pay a fine.

Last week, residents of Williamson County reported receiving calls from someone claiming to be a sheriff’s deputy. The scammer tells the victims that they have an outstanding warrant and need to pay a fine immediately in order to avoid arrest.
